PENDULUM IMPACT TEST: The hammer

The resistance to crack propagation or fracture is an important property of metals and is represented by the notched bar impact strength. This indicates the toughness of a metal and is one of the important mechanical properties alongside, for example, tensile strength and hardness.

The toughness of a metal depends on various factors. These are, for example, the crystal structure or microstructure, the heat treatment or the chemical composition. To test metals the Charpy impact test is usually used.

The funktional principle of the pendulum impact test

The notched bar impact test measures the resistance of a metal sample to the impact of a pendulum hammer.

PENDULUM IMPACT TEST

We use an automatic pendulum impact tester with a digital display for this purpose. The pendulum control and result evaluation are controlled by an electronic program. Before testing, it is necessary to prepare special specimens (in the shape of elongated notched cuboids). The specimen geometry is precisely specified by normative standards. The decisive factor here is the notch in a V or U shape. Notch angle, notch radius and notch position must correspond exactly to the normative specifications in order to produce reproducible results.

At the test the pendulum hammer falls against the sample and shatters it. A break occurs. The impact energy required to break the specimen is measured and displayed. This is done fully automatically on our testing device.

It is also possible to cool the samples down to -80°C in order to carry out tests at low temperatures. A cooling device with a liquid medium is available for this purpose. In this case, statements can be made about the behavior of the material at low temperatures. Testing at low temperatures may be necessary depending on the application and/or test requirements.

Your benefits

  • Automatic pendulum impact tester for consistent test quality
  • Testing possible even at extreme sub-zero temperatures
  • Safety by tough materials – avoidance of brittle, sudden fractures
