Contour measurement: Please scan

Dimensional tests are central components in quality assurance. It is of crucial importance to ensure that the geometric condition of a component meets the requirements necessary for its later application. If there are deviations, this can lead to complications during assembly or even premature failure of the component.

In order to check components according to their drawing specifications, dimensional tests are carried out, among other things. The characteristics examined can include various dimensions, such as lengths, radii, and angles, as well as form and position tolerances.

The methods for checking these dimensions cover a wide spectrum, from simple gauges and calipers to high-precision coordinate measuring machines. When carrying out these tests, it is crucial to choose the appropriate measuring instrument to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Contour measurement

The principle of contour measurement

In the field of contour measurement, an important aspect of quality control, different probe needles slide over the component in one direction. These special measuring instruments are used to capture and analyze the surface profile of a component.

During contour measurement, the appropriate probe needle for the testing task is guided over the component. During this process, the measuring arm records all deflections that occur through the interaction of the probe needle with the surface of the component.

These recorded deflections are then converted into a two-dimensional curve. From this 2D curve, the desired dimensions can finally be determined. These dimensions can be visualized and used for further analysis and quality assurance.

Before testing, it is essential to clean the components. Contaminants such as oil can influence the measurement and falsify the results. Therefore, only clean samples are measured on the device. The coefficient of thermal expansion also plays a crucial role in the conformity of the components. For this reason, the dimensional tests take place in a climate-controlled measuring room.
